The only comprehensive history of Philly’s first NFL team
Before the Eagles, Philly had a premier football club named the Frankford Yellow Jackets, which rose from a sandlot group to become NFL champions over 100 years ago.
Frankford Yellow Jackets revives the glory days of early professional football through the stories of players, fans, and their famous marching band. Originating with the Frankford Athletic Association’s founding in 1899, the Yellow Jackets steadily grew in popularity and by 1922 had become fearsome enough to be pitted against teams from the recently-formed National Football League.
To chart the Yellow Jackets’ rise, Philly sports experts (and fans) Brian Michael and Andrew Weicker conducted extensive research to uncover many never-before-published photos from the exclusive archives of the Historical Society of Frankford. The highs and lows of gridiron competition are meticulously situated in the context of history: The Great Depression brought about the end of the franchise until its rights were reclaimed and, finally, reborn as the Philadelphia Eagles.
Both an homage to the team and the fans' love for the game, this book also explores the social impact of the Frankford Athletic Association on the surrounding neighborhoods, cementing their importance in both football and Philadelphia's history.
Proceeds from the sale of this book benefit the Historical Society of Frankford.
